ELLIS JR. HIGH GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Ellis Jr. High girls basketball team is underway for 2022 with 14 girls out. There are five returning players and nine new players and two managers.

The following is a list of the 2022 EJH girls basketball team:

8th graders: Piper McClung, Maggie Fitzgerald, Jocelyn Eck, Jersee Fabrizius, Taylor Kohl and Evelyn Merriman

7th graders: Mackinley Rhoden, Payten Karst, Rylan Ashenbrenner, Lyla Richards, Libby Schiel, Hannah James, Dora Bencze and Adalynn Hamel

Managers are: Madison Birdsong and Journey Swagerty

Head Coach is Sheryl Butler

Assistant Coach is Paula Erbert

Ellis played their first game of the season in Hill City on Nov. 1, 2022 and split the contests with varsity winning and J.V. taking a loss. In the varsity game, both teams struggled offensively with the first game nerves with Ellis only scoring one point in the first quarter and Hill City zero. Ellis went in at the halftime with nine points to Hill City’s seven. Going into the third quarter, Ellis led by two 16 to 14 but Ellis held Hill City to those 14 points winning the game Ellis 21 to Hill City 14.

Leading scorer was Taylor Kohl with eight points, Jocelyn Eck had seven and Piper McClung and Jersee Fabrizius each had three. Leading rebounder for Ellis was Libby Schiel with nine boards. McClung and Evelyn Merriman each had four and Eck and Kohl each had three.

In the JV game, only two quarters were played due to a shortage of players available for Hill City. Hill City came out on top by three with Hill City nine to Ellis six. The only Ellis player to score was Rylan Aschenbrenner with six point. Leading rebounder for Ellis was Merriman with four followed by Adalyn Hamel with three. Maggie Fitzgerald, Mackinley Rhoden, Aschenbrenner and Hannah James each had one rebound.

Ellis Jr. High Girls Basketball

Ellis vs. Plainville

The Ellis Jr. High Junior Varsity girls basketball hosted their first home game of the season on Nov. 3, 2022 but the Cardinals went home with two wins.

In the varsity contest, Ellis struggled to score in the first quarter while Plainville didn’t have any problem scoring at all. Plainville led after the first quarter 14 to 1. Ellis’ defense kicked into gear and only allowed Plainville two points in the second half while scoring and additional seven making it 16 to 8 at the half, Plainville. Ellis came back from the half with the same scoring problem as the first quarter only scoring two points to Plainville’s nine in the third quarter. Plainville closed the deal in the fourth quarter beating Ellis 32 to 14.

Leading scorer for Ellis was Jocelyn Eck with seven points. Jersee Fabrizius had three points and Taylor Kohl and Libby Schiel each scored two. Leading rebounder for Ellis was Kohl with eight, Schiel had six followed by Eck with five. Piper McClung and Rylan Aschenbrenner each had two points and Fabrizius had one point.

In the J.V. contest, the game was a little closer. Ellis led at the half 10 to Plainville with seven. Ellis only allowed one point for Plainville in the third quarter while adding two to their own in the third quarter with a score of Ellis 12 to Plainville 8. Plainville added an additional six points in the fourth quarter while Ellis could not score any bringing Plainville to the win 14 to 12.

Leading scorer for Ellis Evelyn Merriman with eight points. Aschenbrenner had four. Leading rebounder for Ellis was Merriman with four boards, followed by Dora Bencze with three. Maggie Fitzgerald, Aschenbrenner and Adalyn Hamel each had two rebounds and Mackinley Rhoden had one.
